Health Tip from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona

OK, it’s a new year—Happy New Year!—with a new resolve to be more physically fit—Happy New You! You’re motivated, energized and bursting with confidence. This is hardly the time to think about the possibility that your determination may waver in the coming months…right?Actually, this is the perfect time to ponder it. Because it’s not just a possibility, it’s a probability. Lack of motivation is one of the biggest reasons people don’t exercise as much as they should. So take advantage of today’s determination to plan for tomorrow’s vacillation.

Write down the barriers you’re likely to encounter (and erect in your mind). Then plot how you’ll stop them from stopping you.

Some examples:

If you think you’ll start skipping workouts because you’re busy: Start each week by looking at your calendar. Schedule 30 minutes for exercise every day, and make it as much a priority as anything else.

If you think the lure of the couch will be too powerful: Find a friend or family member who wants to exercise with you. Make a pact that you won’t let the other person “sit this one out.”

If you think you’ll get bored: Plan on varying your activities. Also, think about ways to avoid ennui. Work out with a resistance band at home while watching TV, for example. Or download audiobooks to listen to as you walk or jog.
